Assistant Research Professor
Brendan Moran
Dr. Moran is a lead Research Scientist in Dr. Boutt’s Hydrology Research Group. He supports a diverse array of projects involving water resources and climate change in New England and Arid hydrogeology and Lithium/Copper resources in South America and the Western U.S. His research applies aspects of hydrogeochemistry, physical hydrology, isotope hydrology, remote and terrestrial hydroclimatology, numerical hydrological/geochemical modeling, and evaporate Stratigraphy/Geology. He is currently leading the development of the 2026 Climate Science Assessment for the state of Massachusetts.

Assistant Research Professor
Danielle Hare
Dr. Hare's current role within Dr. Boutt’s Hydrology Research Group is supporting the ongoing efforts to model and evaluate current and future groundwater flooding potential across Massachusetts. She is excited about rejoining the EGCS department and focusing on groundwater's role in surface patterns and processes. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in 2022.

Postdoctoral Fellow
Tanveer Ali Dar
Tanveer Ali Dar is a postdoctoral researcher at University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in hydrogeology, isotopic hydrology, and groundwater-surface water interactions. His research focuses on understanding water flow and geochemical processes in mountainous regions. He has extensive experience in field-based hydrogeological investigations and stable isotope analysis. Dar holds a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. His contributions are pivotal in advancing the understanding of surface water–groundwater interactions in transboundary major river basins.

Graduate Student
Julianna Huba
Ms. Huba is a PhD student in the group whose research focuses on groundwater–surface water interactions in salar marginal environments, with particular emphasis on the aquifer mechanics that regulate these systems. Her work integrates passive hydrologic methodologies alongside physically based field observations to develop a comprehensive understanding of aquifer behavior under varying environmental and climatic conditions. She earned her master’s degree in the group, where she investigated the influence of climate change on flow generation in headwaters of the northeastern United States. She joined the group after completing a B.S. in Geology at Lafayette College

Graduate Student
Tyler DeShong
Mr DeShong is a master’s student in the research group. As an undergraduate at Middlebury College, he studied passive margin uplift and drainage network evolution in the Adirondack Mountains. He has since worked in Vermont’s climate policy sector to increase energy resilience in municipal buildings. His research interests include groundwater flow and transport, fluvial geomorphology, and remote sensing.

Graduate Student
Matthew Belden
Mr. Belden is an MS/PhD student in the research group. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts in 2021. After working as an engineer for two years, he returned to UMass in a staff position in 2023 and performs that role while pursuing his graduate studies. His current research involves modelling and investigating surface water and groundwater interactions in highly regulated river basins, where hydropeaking dam management practices cause unintended consequences for downstream systems.

Graduate Student
Drew Gauthier
Mr. Gauthier is a master’s student in the research group as part of the one-year Professional Masters program. As an undergraduate student at UMass, he majored in Environmental Science and minored in Geology. He currently studies the sourcing and evolution of freshwater inflows in Andean salar systems.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Bresee is an undergraduate geology major in the lab group. With involvement in the Boutt Hydrology group and the Massachusetts DEP, she aims to concentrate her studies in hydrology and geochemistry.
Magdalen Bresee

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Kagunyi is a senior undergraduate double majoring in Environmental Science and Geology. She is also a part of the iCons program at UMass Amherst. Her main focus in the lab is to prep and run water samples on the Picarro Isotopic H2O Analyzer. She is also assisting with a study on groundwater recharge and climate change.
Crystal Kagunyi

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Sarnie is a senior undergraduate Earth Systems and Geology double major. She is assisting the Boutt Hydrology group with the ojos exploration within the PPG project. She also helps prep and run isotope samples using a Picarro Isotope Analyzer. She aims to investigate hydrogeologic features and hone her laboratory skillsets through this research.
Mia Sarnie

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Mr. Olland is an undergraduate senior Environmental Science major and Geology minor. He currently analyzes groundwater data from USGS datasets using python in an effort to understand how the hydrologic cycle is impacted by climate change.
Gabriel Olland

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Waldinger is a junior majoring in environmental science with a minor in history. She is currently assisting the lab group in working on a water budget, geochemical analysis, and residence time estimate of Lake Averic, a reservoir in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
